Describe the Project (Goals, Requirements, and Outcome):
The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is an international scientific, conservation and educational charity founded in 1826, most famous for owning and running both ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. Their mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. Catch were tasked with taking forward their digital presence, creating their first responsive site and migrating many years of great content to a new Drupal 7 platform.
Why Drupal Was Chosen:
Drupal was selected to replace the legacy system in order to provide a scalable, future proof content editor friendly environment for promoting the many aspects of the organisation. The ability to manage both the content and layout of pages, as well as powerful media management tools made Drupal ideal for this project.
Key Modules, Theme, and Distribution Used:
Page Manager/Panels, Context, Display Suite, Field Group, Expire
Why these Modules, Theme, and Distribution were Chosen:
Display Suite with Field Group was used to configure page layouts for all entity types. This normally provided enough functionality to create the page layouts throughout the site, however there were certain occasions where we required greater granular control. For example on several landing pages, we wanted to use different layouts according to the path they were associated with. For this we used Page manager with Panels, which allowed us to set variants for the different levels within the menu system. We could then switch between Display Suite view modes. We also used the Context module to categorise the site into five sections, these being ZSL, ZSL London Zoo, ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, Science and Conservation. Each section has its own context assigned to it based on several conditions which assisted in theming and content allocation.
