The 'Live on Bowen' website was built on the Tej theme, a customizable sub-theme of Omega. Omega was chosen as a base theme due to its powerful control over zones and regions of Drupal.
Used in combination with the Delta and Context modules, control over the layout and aesthetic structure of the website was completely flexible and easy.
To control the presentation of the wide variety of content types, the Display Suite module was used to ensure fields of content added by the administrator is placed correctly to fit the layout of the page. Thanks to the Context and Delta modules, placing content into blocks and regions truly unlock the potential of Drupal.
With a website for a television programme with so many forms of content that are inter-connected, Entity Reference is a key module in order to create a taxonomy for the website based on other content types. Used with Entity Views Attachment and Contextual Views Filter, this module was a building block to achieve simple tasks such as showcasing guests for each episode.
Image URL Formatter
One very under utilized module that is necessary for working with images in an HTML output for Views is the Image URL Formatter. Using this module produces the raw image URL from an image field of a content type, which works wonders in setting a token value in other view outputs. One issue I always have had with the Views module (or perhaps more accurately, Token) was the ability to reference properties of a View Field in an external reference of other field. For example, to use the Image URL and Image Height, you would have to import two separate Image fields of the same type, and rewrite the output using another token so that something like [image-height] would become [image_2].
As with many projects based on Drupal, Views solves many issues for display by displaying and referencing other content in a View. This is used throughout in displaying lists of episodes, lists of guests and the contextual filter of Views is used to display specific content when appropriate.
TB Mega Menu
Discovering TB Mega Menu in researching a menu option was truly a blessing, as it provided a simple, elegant yet powerful menu option out of the box. TB Mega Menu allows for custom layout design of menu dropdowns, with the ability to display blocks for a truly enhanced visual experience. The ability to create a menu in which a left hand column displays all seasons of the show and the right hand column displays the next three episodes is easily achieved when TB Mega menu is used in conjunction with views.
Boost and Speedy
One of the big desires in making the 'Live on Bowen' website production ready was ensuring performance was stellar. The caching, minification and aggregation capabilities of these modules in conjunction with Drupal's default cache options drastically improved server response time and page load, making the website a breeze to use on mobile connections without resorting to complex responsive images with CSS.
